The German researcher Michael Klevenhaus is Director of the Scottish Gaelic Institute in Bonn. When he stumbles over a footnote stating that Beethoven had been sent a Gaelic bagpipe song for editing, his interest immediately aroused: why had he never heard of it? Could this claim be true? Were there any more songs?As the statement is confirmed and Michael also finds a second song, he is convinced: there's a system behind it. He begins to investigate. Which Gaelic songs had been used by Beethoven? Why had the texts and titles of the original songs been misappropriated? Was it possible that these songs were still sung today?Michael embarks on a detective search that leads him from contemplative Bonn to imperial Vienna and the rough north-west of Europe, back in history, to the time of Ludwig van Beethoven and to the first ethnic cleansing of European modernity.
