Wise Women

Wise Women tells the story of five midwives from different parts of the world. We accompany the women in the snow and ice of Siberia, in an old-fashioned delivery room in Mexico. In the high-tech OP in the United Arab Emirates or there where every survived birth is actually a miracle, in a makeshift ward in Malawi. Or in Austria, where a midwife is one of the few left who still does home birth. The oldest female profession in the world is pushed to the margins of society. More and more births no longer take place under the direction of midwives - rationalised away, doctors denying their skills or even imposed with a working prohibition. The midwives' personal stories become a mirror of their country's political and economic situation. They give an idea of the values and the position of women in their society.
